Grain Terminal

Located in Malta's deep-draught Grand Harbour at the very centre of the Mediterranean Sea, the Kordin Grain Terminal is in most strategic location for the handling, storage and transhipment of all types of free flowing grains such as wheat, maize, soyabeans, sorghum, sunflower and barley reaching the Mediterranean from the main grain producing countries.

grain terminal Completed in 1985 at a total cost of around 18 million US dollars and refurbished in 1993, the grain elevator can discharge Panamax bulk carriers up o 80,000 DWT and load coasters/sea going vessels (max. 20,000DWT) and is equipped with a full range of Buhler facilities and installations. Users of the grain facility have so far included Finagrain S.a., Italgrani, Ferruzzi, Andre', Cargill, Soufflet. Mediterranean Feed Services, Glencore Grain B.v., Agroceres, Romak, Tradigrain and Huyton S.A.

Shorebased discharging equipment: 1 mobile mechanical ship unloader HL-SKT type with a 1100 mt/hr maximum bulk unloading capacity.

Shorebased loading equipment: 1 mechanical rail-mounted bulk ship outloader with a maximum loading capacity of 1200 mt/hr.

Silo Capacity

  • About 88,000 metric tons
  • 12 bins of 1,600 metric tons each
  • 18 bins of 3,800 metric tons each

Other Facilities

ship Direct ship-to-ship transfer
Direct ship-to-ship transfer facilities are also available and cargo may be discharged from bulk carriers and loaded directly to outgoing coasters and feeder vessels without intake into silo.

Recycling
Facilities are available for the recycling of grains stored inside the silo bins.

Fumigation
Fumigation pellet dispensers are installed at the distribute conveyors for insect prevention.

Temperature monitoring
A computerized temperature monitoring system is installed inside each of the terminal's thirty storage bins.

Colouring
Facilities are available for the colouring of grains during loading.

General Conditions Applicable for Transhipment Operations
The grain terminal will undertake to store normally stowed and sound cargoes discharged from vessels in identity preserved bins inside the silo. These bins will be allocated exclusively for use by the owner of the grains. The grain terminal will be responsible for the delivery to the owner of all grains stored inside the identity preserved bins.

grain colouring Grains stored inside the terminal shall remain the property of the owner and no delivery shall take place without the owner's authorization.

Cargoes are to be received by the terminal in self-trimming bulk carriers for discharging. Vessels for the outloading of grains from the terminal are to be singledeck/selftrimming vessels suitable for carrying grain in bulk without stowage bags for loading. No cargo is to stored in wingtanks for inward and outward vessels.

Working Hours
For discharging and loading activities, the grain terminal operates during the normal port working hours, i.e. from 08:00 - 12:00hrs and 13:00 - 17:00hrs) with Saturdays, Sundays and local public holidays excluded.

The terminal and the owner of the cargo may however agree that discharging and outloading operations will continue outside the normal port working hours and/or during Saturdays, Sundays and local public holidays at overtime rates.

Transhipment tariffs and storage charges are negotiable.
