Throughout history up until some decades ago most activities in Malta centred around the Grand Harbour. Valletta and other towns and cities around the harbour grew up as a result of these activities. Over the past 40 years the importance of Valletta’s Grand Harbour diminished steadily, mainly due to the extensive devastation of the harbour areas during the Second World War. The Grand Harbour is now seeing a change in its fortunes, with the number of previously run-down areas around it being refurbished and renovated. A key component of this renaissance is the Valletta Waterfront project, conceived to meet the demand from growing cruise activity in Grand Harbour. The vision behind the project is to recreate the bustle and activity which this area was known for in the harbour’s heyday. The site stretches about one kilometre along Pinto Wharf on the northern shore of the harbour with an investment of Eur25m. The Valletta Waterfront project is leading to the regeneration of the historic Grand Harbour. When finished it will be a landmark for all tourists visiting Malta and will also offer entertainment alternatives to the local community.
